The Family Travel Pro answers all of your questions about buggies, pushchairs and strollers for your family holiday and provides our recommendations on the best buggies for holidays.
Do I need a different buggy for travelling?
No, absolutely not. You can use your normal everyday buggy or pushchair for travelling. However, with the popularity of the larger travel systems these days, some people like to choose a light-weight, more compact buggy for taking on holiday.
Also, travel systems and buggies can get damaged when being taken on and off the plane, train or bus, so having a ‘holiday buggy’ can be a good way to minimise the impact of any damage.
You may also be looking for different features for a holiday buggy than for using day-to-day, such as a larger sunshade or lie-flat option for naps.
Either way, it’s up to you if you want to use something different!
Consider buying second-hand
If you do want to buy a holiday buggy, consider purchasing second-hand, especially if you’re not going to use it regularly. These will be a fraction of the price of buying new and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment too.
There are a number of great places to look for pre-loved strollers and buggies, such as
- Facebook buy-and-sell groups in your local area
- Facebook Marketplace
- Car boot sales
- NCT sales (find your next one here)
What should you look for in a travel buggy?
What you should look for in a travel buggy really depends on where you’re travelling to and what kind of trip you’ll be experiencing. Here are a few questions to think about though:
- What will the weather be like on my trip? Do I need a large sunshade or extra warmth?
- How old will my child be? Some strollers are only for 6 months plus and others have top age/weight ranges.
- Will my child nap in this buggy? If so, look for a lie-flat stroller.
- What storage do I need?
- How important is it to be able to easily fold it? If you’re travelling alone or with a number of kids, consider a one-hand fold type.
- What do l like/dislike about my normal buggy

We love the Quinny Zapp Xpress because it folds down so easily and is really compact.
It is suitable from 6 months but can be used with a maxicosi car seat from birth (adaptors needed).
This buggy doesn’t lie-flat but does have an additional recline position and a great, large sunshade.
We love this Chicco Oh La La pushchair because it’s so lightweight – only 8kgs! It has multiple positions and a fully reclining leg rest and is suitable from birth to 15kg (about 3 or 4 years old). This would definitely be one of the best buggies for family holidays.
This Besrey Lightweight Stroller is one of the lightest and most compact buggies we’ve ever come across and is a realistic price too! This buggy folds small enough to even fit in the overhead compartments on the aircraft.
This would be the perfect buggy if you were taking a connecting flight and had to change between terminals or had a long layover. You can check out all the details on this product here.
