Packing your hand luggage when you’re flying with a baby can be a challenge! But with some preparation and our top tips, you can make sure you pack everything you need for flying with a baby.
Here’s the Family Travel Pro’s packing list for flying with a baby:
Travel Changing Mat with Storage
When you’re on the plane, you won’t have a lot of room to change your baby. Having a smaller travel changing mat with a pouch for nappies and wipes can be a great space-saver and will mean you’ve got everything you need in one place for a quick change.
We love this Travel Changing Mat from Belle Style – a super price, in a great colour, with a handy strap for carrying.
Antibacterial wipes and hand sanitiser
Antibacterial wipes are a great idea on a plane and whenever you are out and about. They can be used for a multitude of things – cleaning down tray tables, wiping down toys if they get dropped and keeping baby changing areas clean.
From tried-and-tested brand, Milton, these are our favourite wipes for on the plane as they come in a compact package and won’t take up too much space.
For parents, we’d also recommend packing a good hand sanitiser. Just make sure it’s less than 100mls for getting through security. For more on getting through airport security with a baby, check out our post on Flying with a Baby.
An absolute must-have on board! Traditional muslin cloths can be used for all number of things – cleaning spills and dribbles, extra warmth as a blanket, privacy when feeding – we just wouldn’t be without them.
We love this brightly coloured selection pack of muslin cloths from Cuddles Collection, perfect for all little ones.
Bottles and Sippy Cups
Don’t forget to pack your usual bottles, formula and milk for the journey. You can find all the information you need about the rules for travelling with liquids, medicines etc here, if you’re flying from the UK.
If your baby has started using a sippy cup, don’t forget to bring this on board. Here at the Family Travel Pro, we’ve all had experiences of cups that are less well-suited to air-travel. We’ve had lids coming off, been squirted by cups that don’t adjust well to the change in air pressure… you name it!
The one product that has never let us down in the air is the Munchkin Miracle 360 Cup, suitable for babies from 6 months old. Once you’ve tried this, there’ll be no going back!
If your baby has started on solids, you’ll want to make sure you’ve packed some of their favourite snacks. These will not only keep little tummies full, but will also help pass the time on the flight.
Some types of snacks are liable to get squished in hand luggage so we’d advise using some small storage containers rather than carrying full packets of snacks. We love these storage containers from Nuby.
Toys and Books
Keeping little ones occupied on the flight is key to making sure the journey is easy for everyone. Your baby will have their favourite toys and books from home, but here are three of our favourites if you’re looking for something new.
Learning Links are perfect for the plane. Cheap, colourful, light and providing hours of investigative play, your baby will be entertained for ages with these super toys. You can also use them to attach items to buggies and strollers too. We love these!
Finger puppets are great for keeping babies occupied both on the plane and off. We know you’re little one will fall for these lovely finger puppet characters.
Small board books are ideal for packing in hand luggage for a baby and these great Gruffalo Little Library books are perfect for the youngest of ‘readers’. The set of four will provide some nice variety and they’re quite small so won’t take up much room in your hand luggage.
